Macon Landscaping FAQs

Plain answers for Middle Georgia yards, red clay and all.

Our backyard slopes and washes out every storm. Can a new design fix that?

Often, yes. Many lots in older parts of Macon sit on hills of hard red clay, and rain sheets off instead of soaking in. A design that adds terraced beds, a dry creek bed or a swale steers the water away and turns a muddy slope into usable space. Book a design consultation →

Which grass does best in Macon, and how often does it need mowing?

Bermuda and zoysia handle Middle Georgia heat well, and centipede suits lower-care yards. In the growing season most lawns need mowing every week or so, with edging and a fertilizer plan timed to when the grass is actively greening up.

Will a paver patio crack or sink on clay soil?

It will if the base is skipped. Clay swells when wet and shrinks in a drought, so a solid patio starts with digging out, a compacted gravel base and edge restraints. Retaining walls also need drainage behind them so water pressure does not push them over.

Pine straw or hardwood mulch: which is better for our beds?

Both work. Pine straw is light, stays put on slopes and suits azaleas and other acid-loving shrubs common in Macon yards. Shredded hardwood looks tidier around the front entry. Either way, a layer of two to three inches keeps roots cooler and holds back weeds.

When is the best time to lay new sod in Middle Georgia?

Warm-season sod roots best from late spring through summer, when the soil is warm and the grass is growing. Loosening the clay underneath and watering daily for the first couple of weeks makes the difference between sod that knits in and sod that dries out at the seams.

Is a sprinkler system worth it in Macon's summer heat?

For lawns and new plantings it usually is. Summer heat and dry spells stress grass quickly, and a zoned system with a rain sensor waters early in the morning, skips rainy days and gives shrub beds drip lines instead of overspray.

What does a fall or spring cleanup include?

In fall it means clearing oak and maple leaves, cutting back spent perennials and freshening the mulch. In spring, around the time the city's cherry trees bloom, it means pruning, edging, clearing winter debris and getting beds ready for new planting. Schedule a seasonal cleanup →
